Using a Christmas Carol to teach sentence types for descriptive writing
A lesson aimed at getting students to be more conscious of the sentences types they use in their descriptive writing. Images from A Christmas Carol are used as the stimulus for the descriptive writing. After each task, students complete extension tasks to review their combination of sentence types.
Grade 9 Response on Places in A Christmas Carol
A grade 9 response to the following question:

Explore how Dickens presents places across the novel as a whole.
The extract (included) is from the start of Stave 3 when the ghost of Christmas Present transforms Scrooge’s room.
This was written in one 45 minute sitting to reflect the amount of time students would have to write their response in the exam.
Grade 9 Scrooge outsider to society isolation response
A 45 minute (871 word) high level top band response to the following question: Starting with this extract, how does Dickens present Scrooge as an outsider to society.

Also includes 6 revision cards looking at 6 quotations about isolation.
Grade 9 response about Romeo and Juliet's relationship.
A grade 9 critical and exploratory response to an exam-style generic question about how Romeo and Juliet’s relationship develops during the play.
Also contains a response adapted for a question on Romeo’s feelings for Juliet.
I have included the extract and a brief examiner commentary to help explain why the response would achieve grade 9.
The response is 662 words along which is about the average length of a grade 9 essay in 45 minutes of exam conditions.

Grade 9 Bayonet Charge and Remains (2017 question)
A grade 9 response to the AQA May 2017 power and conflict question in which Bayonet Charge was the named poem.
This response was completed in 45 minutes so replicates the amount of writing expected within the time frame of the examination.
In other grade 9 power and conflict responses on Tes I wrote comparative-style paragraphs.
For this essay I used a different method. In the first half of the essay I focused solely on the named poem Bayonet Charge and then referred back to Bayonet Charge in the second half of the response when analysing Remains.
Both methods are effective.

Benjamin Animal Farm Analysis
A full lesson analysing the character of Old Benjamin in Animal Farm that offers support for weaker students and challenge to higher ability students.
The PowerPoint/pdf includes the following:
3 question starter with detailed answers on slide 2.
Then student attempt to explain 6 key quotations before comparing their explanations to the teacher explanations.
Students are then given a grade 5/6model paragraph and asked to write their own paragraph analysing Benjamin.
Higher level students can instead be shown an aspirational grade 9 paragraph.
The included writing frame is optional for weaker students.

A lesson which explores how women characters are presented in A Christmas Carol. It looks at key quotations from Belle, Mrs Cratchit, Mrs Fezziwig, Fan and other characters. Then it encourages to examine and evaluate whether or not Dickens presents women characters in a positive or problematic way in the novel.
A Christmas Carol significance of the (seemingly) insignificant
